THE POOR

At St. Kat's one of the ways that we express our love and concern for the poor is by sponsoring children through an organisation called Compassion.

Compassion is an international Christian child development and child advocacy ministry. Partnering with local churches, they are committed to the spiritual, economic, social and physical development of children living in extreme poverty in 26 countries, enabling them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults.

Another organistaion close to our hearts is Christians Against Poverty which is a national debt counselling charity with a network of 160 centres based in local churches. CAP offers hope and a solution to anyone in debt through its unique, in-depth service. We are currently exploring the possibility of becoming a CAP centre.

THE PERSECUTED CHURCH

At St. Kat's we give financial support to some Christian organisations who give support and aid to our persecuted brothers and sisters. Violence towards Christians occurs in many different countries and in a variety of different forms.

In places like Sudan, Indonesia, Northern Nigeria, Iraq and parts of India, it can be large scale violence and virtual ‘ethnic cleansing’. In Central Asia and in other former communist states, a distinctly anti-christian sentiment remains. Christians often have to meet in secret and arrest, torture and other mistreatment by security forces is sadly too common. In many places violence is on a smaller scale, with individual incidents of murder, injury and destruction of property. Women and girls can often be very vulnerable in certain contexts. Legal harassment can be another concern, with blasphemy charges and apostasy laws being used against Christians generally and particularly converts from Islam.

The Bible teaches us to "do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers” Galatians 6:10, NIV,

We are called to stand with Christians who endure discrimination, oppression and persecution because of their faith. We can do this both by practical support to relieve their needs, and through our prayers.
